Ministry gifts

on June 26, 2015

For those who struggle to determine their gifts or calling.

You might ask: ” I have tried different ministries but have no success.  Why is this? My heart is at the right place!” or ” I am sure that this is what God wants me to do, but it is not working! Why?” You might feel discouraged and confused or you know that you have a gift  but do not know where to start or how to use it. If this is you, I hope that this might help you with some direction.

Some struggle because they want to try ministering to people on their own especially when they have identified a ministry gap. Most ministries does not cover all the needs of community or the congregation but this is where shared ministry comes in. We are encouraged to work in a team or in pairs or in large groups. Why, you might ask. The answer is that it helps with accountability; also when we need encouragement; or when we need a sound board; it improves objectivity and it is also Biblical.

One of the lessons that I have learnt is that I cannot be a leader in all areas of my life- some areas I have to render a support role  and in others I would serve. Submission to God  and others are very important. This will help us when we lead others. We all have different qualities which enhance the team and make the team effective. The same principles applies to ministry.

The Word teach us about people being send out in pairs (Mark 6:7) – or like with Moses , seventy leaders ( Ex 24: 1)  (or 72- Luke 10:1) were chosen. This means that working in groups is a good thing. Like the twelve Apostles ( Matt 10: 12), we are  stronger in groups. I am not saying that God does not work through individuals, but if you have tried working on your own with no success, then this is for you. Wait for appointed time – then you will be stronger as a leader.  After each event or activity we need to do an assessment or a debrief of the event. Ask yourself: What were  the successes or failures?; What did we do right or what were our weaknesses in this situation?; How will we change this in the future? Be as honest as possible when you do this reflection of the situation- otherwise this exercise will not be helpful.

As to what your gifts are – the gifts of the Spirit are for all of us- and God avails to us what we need depending on the situation- for He is the one who ultimately does the work .   So if we are alone and someone needs healing , God will avail the gift of healing to us and if we are not alone God will avail a word of knowledge to one; a word of wisdom to another; and the gift of healing to yet another.

The Apostle Paul wants us to be informed ( 1 Cor 12: 4-6). He says that the Spirit does the work- whether healing, serving, prophecy or counselling/encouraging – all for the common good (1 Cor 12: 7-11).  Therefore do not fuss about what you have or think you do not have because the Spirit in you has it all- and will manifest what is needed through you or who ever He wish in a timely and effective manner. The person that receive the healing, encouragement or restoration will know that this is ‘God at work.’

Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good (1 Cor 12: 7).

Then the Lord said to Moses, “Come up to the Lord, you and Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel. You are to worship at a distance, (Ex 24:1a).

[ Jesus Sends Out the Seventy-Two ] After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them two by two ahead of him to every town and place where he was about to go (Luke 10:1).

In light of this- if you  can let me know about your involvement in ministry , whether alone or with any ministry group e.g what have you learnt from working alone; what  did you learn from working in a group; what are you plans after doing an assessment of your current situation.

I have included a Holy Spirit Guide in PDF here and Word here.  Feel free to complete the exercises and forward to me if you need a sound board.

I hope this will help you with your ministry or to determine your gifts or just to encourage you so that you are able to use whatever gifts the Spirit wants to manifest in and through you for the common good.
